High-quality CPR is extremely effective in increasing a victim of a cardiac emergency's chance of survival, but most bystanders feel unprepared to intervene when rapid response time is critical. As part of our mission of keeping the CU Boulder community safe, CUEMS maintains a staff of AHA-certified instructors and hosts biweekly Basic Life Support (BLS) classes on campus on Saturdays and Sundays, where participants are trained in responding to respiratory and cardiac emergencies in adults, children, and infants.
BLS certification is the first step to EMT certification. Every healthcare provider in Colorado is required by law to have a Healthcare Provider level BLS certification. The experience gained your time as an EMT will prepare you for excellence in future careers including those as a physician, PA, nurse, paramedic, or firefighter by allowing you to hone your skills in providing quality, compassionate care and familiarize yourself with the healthcare system.
This course includes training on recognizing life-threatening emergencies through evaluation of the ABCs (Airway, Breathing, and Circulation), high quality CPR, AED use, and relief of an obstructive airway - training that will empower you to confidently respond in time to save a life in an emergency. Upon completion of this $50 four-hour class, you will receive an accredited American Heart Association digital certificate that can be printed, shared, and downloaded. This will include a unique ID and QR code that will meet employment requirements and allow employers to confirm your certificate is valid. BLS certifications are valid for 2 years.
Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and bring a notebook, pencil, and water. See you there!
